Environmental certification

To reduce the negative environmental impacts of new development areas, emphasis is now placed on making the urban environment and buildings as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible. This is even more important in a new district like Ártúnshöfði and Elliðaárvogur, which are right next to the City's main outdoor recreation areas and in close proximity to sensitive nature. Therefore, the aim is for the land-use plans for Ártúnshöfði and Elliðaárvogur to receive BREEAM environmental certification.

Objective

The standard aims to help design teams, developers and planners improve, measure and independently certify a neighborhood's sustainability at the design and planning stage.

Within these five categories, requirements for various aspects are evaluated during the planning process. Factors considered include consultation, green and open spaces, transportation, ecology, energy use, pollution, health and wellbeing, land use, and waste and stormwater management, to name the main aspects.

Ólöf Kristjánsdóttir, Transportation Engineer M.Sc. Head of Transportation at Mannvit (BREEAM Communities assessor).

BREEAM environmental certification

BREEAM Communities assessment of planning supports BREEAM assessment of buildings within the neighborhood if environmental certification of individual buildings is decided.

When environmental certification is done, these five categories are examined and the plan is graded:

  • Consultation and management
  • Social and economic wellbeing
  • Resources and energy
  • Land use and ecology
  • Transport and movement
