In-person learning
Swedish classes are held once a week in person. In-person classes are for 7th and 8th grade students in the capital area. Location and times change yearly based on student numbers and where they live. In person classes take place after 4pm. Classes last 80 minutes, with additional homework expected.
Attendance is mandatory as these are in-person classes. Parents must report absences due to illness on the same day.
Online learning
Online Swedish is for 9th and 10th grade students nationwide. The course uses the Gschools online learning platform. Students in ninth and tenth grade in Swedish need to be able to understand both heavy factual text, modern fiction and texts from previous centuries. They need to write several essays in Swedish up to 400 words. They need to debate and explain what they think, all in Swedish. This is not native language teaching.
Online students must complete and submit weekly assignments.
Educational assessment
Students must express themselves in writing and participate in group discussions in Swedish. They must listen to interviews on sometimes difficult topics, write reflections, and contextualize the content. Students also submit audio recordings of themselves speaking Swedish.
The course requires about 150 minutes of weekly work on Swedish assignments. Swedish is a mandatory subject. Lack of participation (inactivity, unfinished assignments) is considered truancy and reported to the home school.
The course aims to teach students responsibility for their own learning.
