Frequently asked questions about the Language Center

Questions and answers

Can I register for a class at the Language Center if I really want to learn Norwegian, Swedish or Polish?

No, unfortunately you cannot. The Language Center's mission is to teach students who already have a foundation in these languages and are therefore entitled to learn them instead of Danish in primary school.

Which students can learn Norwegian, Swedish or Polish instead of Danish in primary school?

Students nationwide with a foundation in Norwegian and Swedish, or students in the capital area who have Polish as their mother tongue. Most students learning Swedish or Norwegian are Icelandic children who have lived in Sweden or Norway.

What prior knowledge is required from students?

Students need to both understand and be able to communicate in the language they want to learn at the Language Center. If a student only knows a few words in the language, has difficulty understanding spoken language, or if it has been a very long time since the student lived in the country where the language is spoken, we recommend that they learn Danish in their primary school.

I think my child should learn Norwegian, Swedish or Polish instead of Danish. How can I register the child with you?

Parents cannot register their child themselves. If you are sure your child has the necessary basic knowledge of the language, you first need to contact the child's school and request that they be registered for study at the Language Center. We will then contact you with further information.

How much does teaching at the Language Center cost?

The Language Center is run by Reykjavík City and is free for Reykjavík City primary schools. Other municipalities purchase the service from Reykjavík City according to a fee schedule that is updated annually. The price is the same for distance learning and on-site learning. Teaching consultation is cheaper as schools handle both teaching and educational assessment themselves.

Can parents pay for teaching at the Language Center if the school does not want to register the student?

No, they cannot. Schools are free to hire teachers in these subjects or purchase the service from the Language Center. The Language Center evaluates whether students have the necessary basic knowledge to receive instruction in these subjects.
