Catering and Accommodation Business Licenses

The City of Reykjavik is a statutory reviewer under the Restaurants, Lodging and Entertainment Act No. 85/2007 and the mayor's office handles outsourcing and servicing of applicants when applications for a business licence for a restaurant/place of accommodation are received from the County Council of the capital for consideration by the City of Reykjavik.

The review process

Step 1

The application is assessed for land use provisions in planning.

Step 2

If the application complies with the organizational plans, the mayor's office requests reviews from the following parties:

a. Construction Supervisor – who examines whether the scheduled activities comply with the building permit in force and that a final evaluation of the premises has been carried out.

b. The Health Department confirms that its activities comply with the provisions of the Hygiene and Pollution Prevention Act and the Food and Drugs Act and, when applicable, the Health Committee's assessment of the adverse effects of its activities, including acoustics.

Step 3

When/if the construction supervisor has submitted a positive review, the mayor's office requests a review from:

a. The capital fire brigade verifies compliance with fire protection requirements as assessed by the fire brigade.

Step 4

Once all of these reviews are available, the mayor's office will provide a full review to the Metropolitan County Council based on them.

a. If the reviewers are all positive, the CoR's overall review is positive.

b. If any/some/all reviewers are/u negative, the CoR's overall review is negative.

Step 5

The Metropolitan County Council will process the application in accordance with the provisions of the Catering, Lodging and Entertainment Act. Please note that the County's delivery is open at 9:00am-5:00pm (weekdays)
