Outdoor recreation areas

Green areas are spread throughout the city, ranging from well-maintained and designed city parks to more natural outdoor recreation areas. You can choose between breathing in fresh sea air or taking a forest bath.

Gardening

Gardening work in Reykjavík City involves many tasks. Weeding, tending to trees and recreational paths, planting flowers, and on the rare days without enough rain, bringing out the watering cans.

Vegetable gardens

Vegetable gardens for summer 2021 will open on May 1. Reykjavík residents can get a vegetable garden for their own use. Applications will open on March 15, 2021. Apply by sending an email to matjurtagardar@reykjavik.is

Tree felling

A permit is required to fell trees taller than 8 meters or older than 60 years. Apply for felling by email to usk@reykjavik.is or send an application to the Department of Environment & Planning, Borgartún 12-14, 105 Reykjavík.

School of Work

The main role of Reykjavík's School of Work is to provide students from upper primary school grades with a constructive, safe and motivating work environment during summer. It also offers education on environmental issues. All students from 8th, 9th, and 10th grades of Reykjavík's primary schools are offered summer jobs at the School of Work. Parents enroll their adolescent children using an electronic enrollment form for the School of Work.

Reykjavík Botanic Garden

Reykjavík Botanic Garden is a living, open-air museum. The Botanic Garden was founded in 1961 and is managed by Reykjavík City. The Botanic Garden's role is to preserve and document plants for education, research, and enjoyment.
