Voting in My Neighborhood

Once the ideas have been selected, all Reykjavík districts conduct voting on Hverfidmitt.is. The vote for My Neighborhood takes place from September 14 to 28, 2023. All people aged 15 and over who are legally resident in Reykjavík can vote. The voting is online and users must identify themselves with an electronic ID or IceKey.

How do I vote in My Neighborhood?

You can choose in which district of Reykjavík to vote, but you can only vote in one district.

You can choose ideas until the full amount for the district has been allocated. You do not have to use the full amount for the district.

You can vote more than once—but only the last vote is valid.

In the right corner of each idea there is a selection tab where you can get more detailed information about that project.

The star - double vote

Do you prefer one idea more than the others? You can add a star to one of your preferred ideas to give that idea two votes.

Electronic ID and IceKey

Please note that in order to vote, residents must have an electronic ID on the phone or an IceKey

You can get help with voting at the Reykjavík City Service Center, Borgartún 12–14, and at any of the City’s five service centers during the voting period.

How is funding divided between districts?

Reykjavík has 10 districts: Vesturbær, Miðborg, Hlíðar, Laugardalur, Háaleiti-Bústaðir, Breiðholt, Árbær, Grafarvogur, Grafarholt-Úlfarsárdalur, and Kjalarnes.

You can see Reykjavík’s district division inside the City Viewer (IS). Under “Borgarskipting” (“City Division”), check “Borgarhlutar” (“City Districts”).

Fund Distribution

  • Árbær: 41 million
  • Breiðholt: 67 million
  • Grafarholt-Úlfarsárdalur: 31 million
  • Grafarvogur: 56 million
  • Háaleiti-Bústaðir: 51 million
  • Hlíðar: 41 million
  • Kjalarnes: 14 million
  • Laugardalur: 27 million
  • Miðborg: 39 million
  • Vesturbær: 53 million

Why do some districts get more than others?

The project funding is expected to be 450 million kr. In order to guarantee the smallest districts a minimum amount, a quarter of the funding is allocated equally between districts. The remaining funding is divided between the districts in proportion to the population.

The first 112.5 million is thus shared equally between the ten districts, bringing each district a minimum of 11.25 million. The remaining 337.5 million is divided between the districts according to the number of residents to reach the total funding for each district.

Project implementation

The design of the selected projects begins after the voting is complete. After that, the projects will be tendered and development will begin in the summer of the next year. Information on their progress will be shared in the Development Viewer.

Idea creators and residents’ councils may be consulted on the implementation of projects—especially when the ideas need to be changed or adapted before implementation.

Ideas that are not selected in the vote may be forwarded as suggestions to the relevant councils or as comments on city planning. This will make the ideas useful.
