History

Hitt Húsið was founded by the Reykjavík City Sports & Leisure Council on October 15, 1991 for young people aged 16-25.

At first, Hitt Húsið was located in the old nightclub Þórskaffi in Brautarholt. There, diverse activities for young people in culture, employment and entertainment began. In the first year of operation, Unglist - a youth arts festival, as well as open houses for disabled young people, began. The building also had rehearsal facilities for bands and hosted dances for secondary schools.

In August 1995, the operation moved to the old Geysir building on Aðalstræti. Since then, Hitt Húsið has developed further into a cultural and information center for young people, in addition to operating various programs in counseling, education and employment, as well as recreational activities for disabled young people. In March 2002, Hitt Húsið moved again, this time to Pósthússtræti 3-5.

In fall 2015, part of the recreational activities for disabled people moved to Rafstöðvarvegur 9, and in January 2019, all of Hitt Húsið's operations moved to Rafstöðvarvegur 7-9.
