Green Deal accomplishments
In June 2020, City Council decided to develop a comprehensive strategy for the finances and investment of Reykjavík City under the title of the Green Deal.
Future vision
Reykjavík is a community characterized by a healthy environment, equal opportunities, good service, and a strong economy that does not rely on natural resources.
It takes into account three key dimensions: economic, social, and environmental aspects. A vision of the future is based on these three pillars.
Green city
Reykjavík is a flourishing, enjoyable, and healthy city that will be carbon neutral by 2040.
Growing City
Reykjavík has a powerful, competitive community with a fertile ground for creative ideas that attract people to live, visit, and operate in.
A City for People
Reykjavík society is built on justice, fairness and the participation of children and adults. City residents live safely and can positively influence their own lives and others. By listening, mediating, scrutinizing, and developing, we support inclusion to ensure no one is left behind.
Investment plan
In the next 10 years, Reykjavík City will invest 220 billion in building an ever-growing green city for people.
The companies owned by the City will also increase their investments, especially in green infrastructure of utility companies and social housing for people with a low-income.
Digital transformation
Digital transformation primarily encompasses the digital adaptation of services currently offered by the City.
A special initiative was launched to spearhead this transformation, which is due to conclude at the end of 2023. This is a Herculean task with few parallel projects in Iceland and which touches all workplaces and staff dedicated to enhanced services thanks to modern technology.
Domestic cooperation
In order for the Green Deal to succeed, we need to collaborate with various domestic stakeholders.
It's necessary to work with labor market players and the government to tackle future challenges.
International collaboration
Reykjavík City will support the implementation of the Green Deal by utilizing the opportunities provided by participating in international collaborative projects.
Indicators
To measure the progress of the Green Deal, Reykjavík City has adopted three standards from the international organization World Council on City Data (WCCD), which assesses cities' sustainability status.
Overview of the Green Deal
- The Green Deal was developed alongside the preparation of the budget for 2021 and the five-year plan for 2021-2025.
- It was developed as a response to the global pandemic impact of the coronavirus and updated at the beginning of 2022.
- The Green Deal outlines the City's long-term vision and links its key strategies and projects to that vision.
- It addresses both the development of services and the City's system of governance while also emphasizing the City's investment priorities and related companies.
Monitoring the Green Deal
Key tools of the Green Deal include a 10-year financial policy, a five-year budget, and a 10-year investment plan.
Action plans are regularly reviewed and progress is reported in reports presented to the City Council. The Green Deal website aims to showcase the accomplishments to be achieved and will inform once they have been reached.
