Mayor's Neighborhood Days in Vesturbær Oct. 13-17, 2025
Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit city neighborhoods over the coming weeks and months.
During Neighborhood Days, the mayor will visit public schools and other city facilities, meet with local city staff, talk with residents and representatives from community organizations, sports clubs and parent associations, and host open events where people can discuss issues with her and senior city officials.
The mayor invites residents for coffee and conversation at the Maritime Museum on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 5 to 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome!
Neighborhood profile
Vesturbær is an established, historic neighborhood that remains a vibrant hub with shops, cafés, and cultural institutions. The neighborhood is family-friendly, offering excellent school, recreation, and community programs.
You can hardly talk about Vesturbær without mentioning the KR sports club, which has deep roots in the neighborhood, just like Vesturbæjarlaug pool, which opened in 1961. The neighborhood store Melabúðin is right nearby, having opened in 1956.
Proximity to the ocean is a defining feature of the neighborhood. One of the city's most popular walking paths runs along Ægisíða, and Eiðisgrandi also offers refreshing outdoor activities.
Schedule for the mayor's visit
During Neighborhood Days, Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit schools in the area. She will meet with representatives from the schools' parent associations and speak with school administrators and other staff members. She will also learn about other city activities in the neighborhood and meet with community organizations and sports club representatives.
