Mayor's Neighborhood Days in Kjalarnes
Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit Kjalarnes on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025.
During Neighborhood Days, the mayor will visit public schools and other city facilities, meet with local city staff, talk with residents and representatives from community organizations, sports clubs and parent associations, and host open events where people can discuss issues with her and senior city officials.
Neighborhood profile
Kjalarnes is a peninsula that extends into the middle of Faxaflói Bay, south of the mouth of Hvalfjörður. As a neighborhood, Kjalarnes stands out in many ways. About 1,100 residents live in an area of more than 143 square kilometers with unique access to its peaceful natural surroundings. This is truly countryside within the city, and the neighborhood combines the benefits of rural life with urban living.
Settlement on Kjalarnes dates back to the original settlement of Iceland. The area has rural farms and active agriculture, but the heart of the community is in Grundarhverfi. There you'll find Berg preschool, Klébergsskóli primary school and a sports center where UMFK holds practices. Klébergslaug swimming pool is in Grundarhverfi, pleasantly situated in the surrounding nature, and it is a short walk down to the shore, which includes changing facilities for ocean swimming.
Kjalarnes is a haven for birds with excellent conditions for birdwatching. Brautarholt has a 12-hole golf course, and a nine-hole disc golf course runs from the swimming pool. The area is also home to Mount Esja, often considered Reykjavík's city mountain. It's now one of the most popular outdoor recreation areas for city residents, with tens of thousands hiking and enjoying other outdoor activities on the mountain each year.

During Neighborhood Days in Kjalarnes, Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit schools, meet with parent association representatives and speak with school administrators and other staff. She will also learn about other city activities in the neighborhood and meet with community organizations and sports club representatives.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, residents are invited for coffee and conversation at an open meeting in Klébergsskóli. Residents will have an opportunity to discuss issues with the mayor and representatives from the City's senior administration.
