Planning description for Grundarhverfi in Kjalarnes

Kjalarnes

A new planning description for the Grundarhverfi neighborhood plan and surrounding areas in Kjalarnes is now under public review.

The planning description is published for public review and official statements under Article 40 of Planning Act No. 123/2010. The data is accessible through the Urban Planning Portal. Comments and suggestions about the description may be submitted through the Urban Planning Portal no later than Nov. 6, 2025.

The planning area extends roughly from Vesturlandsvegur eastward to the coastline in the south, westward to a line west of the Hofshverfi area from the sea to Arnarholt, and northward to a line from Vesturlandsvegur just north of the Brautarholtsvegur intersection to the property boundaries of Arnarholt.

The main purpose of the neighborhood plan is to create policy for the area's future development, focusing on improving the quality of existing development, implementing environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions, and protecting the unique character and local identity of Grundarhverfi within Reykjavík.

Extensive consultation with residents

Extensive consultation has been a key focus during the preparation of the planning description. Officials held consultation days in Kjalarnes and consultation meetings in Grundarhverfi where residents could share their ideas and suggestions. Residents also had the opportunity to participate in an online survey about the neighborhood's future vision.
