Neighborhood profile

Árbær is the second-largest district by area and home to 13,000 residents.

Árbær takes its name from a farm that once stood where Árbær Open Air Museum, the country's largest outdoor museum, is now located. The museum preserves many of Reykjavík's historic buildings, and it's always enjoyable to get lost there and let your mind drift back to the city's earlier days.

The Árbær district offers easy access to beautiful natural areas. These include Elliðaárdalur and Heiðmörk with their wide range of opportunities for outdoor recreation and exercise. Lake Rauðavatn is also close by, and within the district sits Víðidalur, a stable complex with an indoor riding arena and riding fields. The ski area in Bláfjöll is just a short drive away, and Ártúnsbrekka features a ski lift designed for children and beginners.

The district boasts ambitious school and community programs alongside excellent sports facilities. These include the Fylkir sports complex with facilities for various athletic activities and the ever-popular Árbæjarlaug swimming pool, beautifully positioned at the top of Elliðaárdalur. Lower in the valley sits Rafstöðin, which has taken on a new role as a true educational and cultural center offering diverse services and a fun outdoor playground.
