Mayor's Neighborhood Days in Hlíðar
Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit city neighborhoods over the coming weeks and months.
During Neighborhood Days, the mayor will visit public schools and other city facilities, meet with local city staff, talk with residents and representatives from community organizations, sports clubs and parent associations, and host open events where people can discuss issues with her and senior city officials.
Neighborhood Days will be in Hlíðar March 2-6, 2026.
Neighborhood profile
Hlíðar is a well-established residential neighborhood with about 13,500 residents. The neighborhood has one public primary school, Hlíðaskóli, serving students in grades one through 10. The area also has Klettaskóli, a primary-level special education school; Hjallastefnan primary school; Suðurhlíðaskóli; and Hamrahlíð Junior College. Four preschools serve the neighborhood.
The neighborhood offers easy access to public transportation and the city's walking and cycling trail network. Popular outdoor recreation areas are nearby, including Öskjuhlíð, Klambratún and Nauthólsvík. Culture and the arts are close at hand in Hlíðar, with Kjarvalsstaðir Museum located in the heart of the neighborhood. The Valur football club also runs a variety of sports programs at Hlíðarendi.
Schedule for the mayor's visit
During Neighborhood Days, Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit area schools and meet with parent association representatives, as well as speak with school administrators and other staff members. She will also learn about other city activities in the neighborhood and meet with community organizations and sports club representatives.
The mayor invites residents for coffee and conversation at the Community House in Bólstaðarhlíð on Thursday, March 5 at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
