About Árbæjarskóli

Árbæjarskóli is a comprehensive primary school where education and upbringing, aligned with the National Curriculum for Primary Schools and the policies set by the Reykjavík education authorities, form the foundations of our operation. Great emphasis is put on team work among all participants and, moreover, cooperation with the local community is of significant importance to our school.

Putting students first

Our primary goal in education is to ensure that students, teachers, and other staff achieve their maximum potential. A good primary school is one of the strongest pillars in any community. At Árbæjarskóli, we emphasize a reciprocal trust between the school staff and the local community, aiming to strengthen and empower everyone's progress and maturity.

The methods we apply encourage ambition and independent work, offering everyone the opportunity to use their own resources. At Árbæjarskóli, we put students first. Our main focus is on wellbeing and quality education; these elements must go hand-in-hand for effective primary schoolwork.

Positive interactions

In Árbæjarskóli, it is important for interactions to be based on mutual respect, courtesy, and consideration, so that everyone feels comfortable. Mutual trust and positive and constructive communication are most important in fostering a positive work environment.

We operate on the principle that satisfied and passionate individuals who responsibly handle their duties achieve success in their work. Thus, self-esteem and positive self-image forms the foundation for independent work and effective teamwork. Every individual also needs to learn responsible interactions and to take responsibility for their immediate environment and community. At Árbæjarskóli, we want to help students succeed in this.

Home and school cooperation

Successful schoolwork also relies on good collaboration and mutual trust between home and school. Guardians know their children best, which is why a solid cooperation with teachers and school administrators is crucial, ensuring contact whenever needed to both boost and support the students' academic and social skills.

Approximately 700 students study at Árbæjarskóli, and over 100 people serve on its staff. The school’s excellent sports facilities include a gym, swimming pool, artificial turf field, and spacious school grounds with diverse sports fields and play areas. The sports curriculum is taught in the school's gym for 1st to 7th grades, while students from 8th to 10th grade have their lessons at Fylkishöllin.

We enjoy a good cooperation with the preschool in our neighborhood, the Fylkir Sports Team, the Ársel Recreation Center, Reykjavík Energy, Borgarholtsskóli, Reykjavík Technical College, and others.
