Each year, awards are given for high-quality renovations of older buildings and for exemplary grounds of service, institutional and apartment buildings.

Beautification Committee

The Reykjavík City Beautification Committee was appointed in May 1968. The following social organizations were represented on the Committee: The Architects' Association of Iceland, Housewives' Association of Reykjavík, Gardening Association of Iceland, and Reykjavík Homeowners' Association. Reykjavík City appointed to the Beautification Committee Hafliði Jónsson, horticultural manager of Reykjavík at the time, Gísli B. Björnsson, graphic designer, and Gunnar Helgason, City Councilor and the driving force behind the establishment of a beautification committee.

On the anniversary of Reykjavík City on August 18, 1968, the Beautification Committee chose Safamýri as the most beautiful street in the city for the first time. Many other streets in Reykjavík, such as Einimelur, Hvassaleiti, Kleifarvegur, and Sporðagrunnur, were also considered to contribute to the city's appearance.

Since then, beautification awards have been presented annually for beautiful houses and grounds in Reykjavík, most often in connection with Reykjavík City's anniversary or in the fall.
