Resident parking permits

Who is eligible for a resident parking permit?

You can apply for a resident parking permit (I. íbúakort) if:

• you are legally resident within a paid parking zone in Reykjavík, or in a defined Resident Parking Permit Zone
• there is no parking spot on your property
• You are the registered owner of the home, or you have a signed consent from the property owner to submit with your application
• if you are a registered owner or keeper of a vehicle in the Vehicle Register
• the debt to the Parking Service has not been submitted for secondary debt collection

When should I renew my resident parking permit?

Permits are generally valid for one year at a time, but never longer than the term of the property owner's consent.

Renewal requires submitting a new application, as resident parking permits are not subscription-based.

Is written consent from the property owner required?

All applicants other than the registered property owner must provide the homeowner's consent when applying for a resident parking permit. You must complete a PDF form and submit it with your application.

How much does a resident parking permit cost?

1,500 kr. a month for vehicles that run exclusively on electricity or hydrogen.

3,000 króna per month for other vehicles.

20,000 króna per month for the second resident parking permit.

A resident parking permit is issued for one year at a time. However, a resident parking permit cannot remain valid beyond the expiration date of the homeowner's consent. The same applies to the renewal of resident parking permits.

How do I change my registration number or transfer my resident parking permit to another property?

Edit a license plate number

Requests to change a registration number must be submitted to ibuakort@reykjavik.is in advance. The resident parking permit holder must be listed as the registered owner or operator of the vehicle in the Icelandic Transport Authority's vehicle registry.

For temporary changes due to repair or damage to the permit holder's own vehicle, the vehicle registry requirement does not apply for periods of up to eight weeks, provided the expected duration is specified in the request.

The following information must be included with any request to change a license plate number:

• Permit holder's ID number
• Email address
• Previous license plate number
• New license plate number

Edit a resident parking permit zone

If your home sits on the boundary between two resident parking permit zones, you may request to have your permit transferred to the neighboring zone.

The following information must be included with any request to change a license plate number:

• Permit holder's ID number
• Email address
• Current zone
• Requested zone
• Send an email to request a zone change

Transfer a resident parking permit to another property in the zone

• If you have moved your legal residence to another property within a resident parking permit zone, you may request to transfer your permit to that property. If you are not the registered owner of the property in the Property Registry, a signed consent from the property owner must be attached to your request.

The following information must be included with any request to transfer a resident parking permit to another property:

• Permit holder's ID number
• Email address
• New legal residence
• New residential unit number
• Attachment
• Send an email to request a resident parking permit transfer to another property

Rules on Resident Parking Permits

A resident parking permit and a resident parking permit 2 grants the user permission to park cars free of charge, in paid parking spaces, within the Resident Parking Permit Zone, subject to some limitations.

Business parking permit

A business parking permit serves operators and allows free parking in paid parking spaces. The applicant must own the business and its premises, or hold written authorization from the property owner to apply for a business parking permit.

Hvað kostar íbúakort?

• 1.500 krónur á mánuði fyrir bifreiðar sem ganga eingöngu fyrir rafmagni eða vetni.
• 3.000 krónur á mánuði fyrir aðrar bifreiðar.

Endurnýja íbúakort

Gildistími er oftast eitt ár en aldrei lengur en gildistími samþykkis íbúðareiganda. 

Íbúakort eru ekki í áskrift. Sækja þarf um nýtt íbúakort þegar það eldra fer að renna út. 

Endurnýjun er ný umsókn því íbúakort eru ekki í áskrift.

• Endurnýja íbúakort 1 með nýrri umsókn
• Endurnýja íbúakort 2 með nýrri umsókn

Breyta bílnúmeri

Ef þú varst að fá þér nýjan bíl þarftu að breyta bílnúmerinu á íbúakortinu. 

• Íbúakorthafi þarf að vera orðinn skráður eigandi eða umráðamaður bílsins eða ökutækis samkvæmt skráningu í ökutækjaskrá Samgöngustofu.

Ef um er að ræða tímabundna breytingu vegna viðgerðar eða tjóns á eigin bifreið í allt að 8 vikur eru ekki gerðar sömu kröfur um skráningu íbúakorthafa í ökutækjaskrá en þá þarf að taka fram tímalengd.

Ef þú býrð á mörkum tveggja íbúakortasvæða getur þú óskað eftir því að breyta íbúakortasvæði þínu yfir á nærliggjandi svæði. Þú fyllir út form og sendir inn.

Breyta lögheimili

Ef þú hefur flutt lögheimili þitt í aðra eign á íbúakortasvæði getur þú óskað eftir færslu íbúakorts á þá eign. Ef þú ert ekki skráður eigandi eignarinnar í fasteignaskrá þarf undirritað samþykki íbúðareiganda að fylgja í viðhengi.
