Support for household item purchases
Refugees receiving financial assistance in Reykjavík may be eligible for support to purchase household items and appliances. This support is for those without possessions who are setting up a home. It is granted only once.
Do I qualify for support for household purchases?
Refugees who are eligible for financial assistance, live in rented accommodation, and are legally domiciled in Reykjavík can apply for support to buy general household items and appliances necessary for home use.
General household items include things like beds, mattresses, bedding, duvets, duvet covers, tables, chairs, cutlery sets, pans, pots, dinnerware, kitchen utensils, and so on.
Appliances include items like a washing machine, refrigerator, blender, toaster, rice cooker, simple coffee machine, vacuum cleaner, microwave oven, and more.
If you're uncertain whether something qualifies for the household purchase support, you can seek assistance from the staff at the centers.
What is the amount of the support?
The support is two-fold: support to purchase general household items and support to purchase appliances. You can get up to 100,000 kr. to buy household items, and those with dependent children can get up to an additional 50,000 kr. per child. The support to buy appliances is a maximum of 100,000 kr.
How do I apply?
You apply for the support at a center. It's crucial that the application is approved before the purchases are made. The support is provided only once.
What happens next?
After your application is approved, you can get a reimbursement for household or appliance expenses that fall under the definition of necessary home appliances (see above). Please note that your ID number (the beneficiary's) must appear on all receipts to get a refund. We only accept receipts from recognized businesses.
Send a copy of the receipt (for example a picture) by email to your local center. The email should include your full name and ID number.
When staff has confirmed that the purchases meet the conditions, the support is transferred to your account.
