Waste collection has been proceeding smoothly recently. Waste collection staff worked ahead during the week leading up to Easter to complete collections before the holiday break, as employees will be off on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Additional collection services will be provided as needed on Holy Thursday and the First Day of Summer.
Recycling drop-off services during Easter
Paper and plastic containers will be emptied on Wednesday, April 16, and Saturday, April 19. Glass and metal containers were emptied this week.
Paper and plastic containers are now at all major recycling drop-offs. The new sorting system includes glass packaging and metal collection at recycling drop-offs. Containers for these categories are at all recycling drop-offs in the capital area. A map is available on SORPA's website.
SORPA recycling centers will be open on Holy Thursday and the First Day of Summer. Centers will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.
Compost reminder
The spring gardening season is upon us, with the golden plover's arrival reminding us of brighter days ahead. Compost is also available, as distribution of free compost, an effective soil enhancer, began earlier this month. GAJA's compost production operates with an operating permit from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. Please note that larger quantities can be picked up at GAJA on the first Saturday of each month.
Reykjavík City also offers residents the opportunity to collect compost at seven neighborhood locations throughout the city. Remember to bring a shovel!
