The spring gardening season is upon us, with the golden plover's arrival reminding us of brighter days ahead. Compost has also arrived, with free distribution of this powerful soil enhancer beginning Saturday, April 5. The compost is intended for outdoor use only.
The compost is partially produced from food waste that residents collect in bins at their homes. The food waste is processed into gas that powers all of Reykjavík's garbage trucks, as well as compost. GAJA's compost production operates with an operating permit from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority.
Larger quantities can be collected at GAJA on the first Saturday of each month.
Reykjavík City also offers residents the opportunity to collect compost at seven neighborhood locations throughout the city. Remember to bring a shovel!
Where will the containers be located?
- At Klambratún, in the parking lot on Flókagata.
- Laugardalslaug Pool, behind the grandstand, on Sundlaugavegur.
- Spöngin
- At Breiðholtslaug Pool
- Selásbraut at Norðurás
- Kjalarnes, west of the District Depot
- Þjóðhildarstígur
Compost nourishes the soil and provides essential nutrients to plants. It's important to mix the compost with soil at a ratio of one to three. The compost is potent and can burn sensitive plants and grasses if not properly mixed.
Residents have done an outstanding job sorting food waste and deserve significant praise for their efforts! Using compost supports the nutrient cycle, benefiting the environment, climate and economy. Thank you for sorting food waste and using compost.
