Fewer categories at Jafnasel and Dalvegur
Starting March 31, the SORPA bs. recycling centers at Jafnasel in Reykjavík and Dalvegur in Kópavogur will stop accepting bulky construction and renovation waste, including rubble, timber, fixtures, tiles and furniture. Please note that both locations will be closed March 30 as part of the transition.
Both sites will continue to accept general household waste and will be designated as small recycling centers. They will accept around 30 categories, down from the 40 that have been available in recent years.
Extended hours at recycling centers
All waste categories will continue to be accepted at SORPA bs.'s larger recycling centers at Ánanaust, Blíðubakki, Breiðhella and Sævarhöfði. SORPA bs. has also extended operating hours at these locations. They are now open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, except Blíðubakki, which opens at noon and closes at 6:30 p.m.
What changes?
The following categories will no longer be accepted at Dalvegur and Jafnasel. Residents will need to bring these items to a larger recycling center:
- Painted wood
- Unpainted wood
- Tires
- Tiles
- Sanitary fixtures
- Window glass
- Gypsum
- Gravel and sand
- Hay bale plastic
- Bulky waste, e.g., furniture and mattresses
- Large metal items, e.g., bicycles and gas grills
The changes are designed to simplify drop-off, reduce wait times and make better use of each site. They are the result of work carried out by SORPA bs. staff, the member municipalities and the SORPA bs. board.
For some time, both sites have been too small to handle the volume of visitors and the number of categories on offer. When they opened in 1991, eight categories were planned for; today that number has grown considerably.
