Q&A
When is the map updated?
The housing development map is updated as new information arrives. This means new project data, such as changed planning or new building permits, are added immediately. A thorough review occurs quarterly to ensure accuracy.
What is a future area?
A future area is where initial ideas for housing development are emerging. This means that the ideas are based on the future vision defined in the City's municipal plan. At this stage, nothing is decided or finalized.
What does it mean if a project is in development?
A project in development means ideas for the area are being formed. This process often begins with discussions between stakeholders, such as landowners, businesses, and City authorities. Once ideas are formulated, the project enters a formal planning process, which may include a planning competition or resident consultation. Afterward, the area is prepared for construction, such as street works or utility installation.
What does it mean if a project is under construction?
A project under construction means building has begun. This occurs after a building permit has been issued. You can see construction progress in the map viewer.
What does it mean if a project is completed?
A project is considered complete when homes are finished and ready for occupancy. This means the housing is ready for new residents. However, the map only shows information about apartments registered after the system opened in November 2022.
What is a development plot?
A development plot is a defined area where construction often occurs in stages. For example, the Orkureitur, where a larger project is divided into smaller parts. This allows the map viewer to show the overall picture of development on the plot and see how individual constructions are connected.
What is a district?
Reykjavík is divided into 10 districts to facilitate planning and services for residents. Each district contains several neighborhoods, helping to efficiently plan development and transportation.
What is the CityLine?
CityLine is a new, environmentally friendly transportation system for the entire capital area. It will be part of the Strætó Public Transport system and will run on dedicated lanes with priority at intersections. This increases reliability and speed. CityLine is designed as a practical alternative to private cars.
