About Melaskóli

Teaching in Melaskóli started on October 5, 1946. In the fall of 1999, a new school building was inaugurated, and the school became single session. Melaskóli took over from Skildinganesskóli, which was located at various sites in Skerjafjörður and Grímsstaðaholt from 1926 to 1946. Skildinganesskóli became an independent school in 1936, having formerly existed as an outpost of Mýrarhúsaskóli and later Miðbæjarskóli. 

History

In the first academic year at Melaskóli, there were approximately 850 students and 26 teachers. The highest number of students that attended school was 1493 in the school year 1955 to 1956. Einar Sveinsson, architect, designed the older school building and the artists Barbara Árnason and Ásmundur Sveinsson were commissioned to decorate the building. The architect of the new school building is Ögmundur Skarphéðinsson. Melaskóli students in the school year 2000 to 2001, donated the artwork, Borg, to the school. It is located in the new building.

Melaskóli’s policy

Melaskóli is an established school in an established neighborhood. In the school operations, tradition and innovation are both emphasized. Every effort is made to uphold and nurture the best of the methods, traditions, and rules of conduct that have evolved over the years. Melaskóli is a comprehensive primary school where around 550 students from 1st-7th grade and about 80 staff work.

The goal of Melaskóli is to be a successful school based on a solid foundation where joy and empathy, courtesy, and a positive discipline characterize the working environment. Students' learning and well-being are always a priority. Well-being, cooperation, ambition, and joy in creating are the values emphasized in daily activities. The school places great emphasis on good and strong cooperation with the school's families.
