The City Council approved a partnership agreement with the new central city association Miðborgin Reykjavík - a non-profit organisation, and the City of Reykjavík will support the association with ten million ISK annually in the years 2024-2026. The organisation aims to promote the city centre as an exciting and fun destination.

Operators in the city centre officially founded the Miðborgin Reykjavík-market association in May of this year, 2023, but preparations had been going on for some time. The association makes the city centre an interesting and attractive destination for residents and other interested parties, all nationals and foreign visitors. The goal is to promote commerce, services,  social life and culture in the city centre.

Work towards common goals

The agreement is made subject to the current budget at the time of the agreement, and it aims to strengthen cooperation and information sharing and to work towards common goals. Also to work together on various issues and hold regular consultations on the issues of the city centre and major projects.

Miðborgin Reykjavík receives a contact person at the City of Reykjavík, who will help the organisation, but he also has the right to sit as an observer at the board meetings of Miðborgin Reykjavík. The association received a grant of ten million ISK from the Central Fund this year.
