Vitatorg day training kitchen to close temporarily for renovations

The entrance to Vitatorg Day Training and its community center.

The production kitchen at Vitatorg Day Training will be expanded and completely renovated. This was approved by the City Executive Council today. These renovations are necessary to meet modern standards for production kitchens. Once the project is finished, the kitchen will occupy the current cafeteria space, and the cafeteria will move to the floor above.

The production kitchen at Vitatorg Day Training prepares an average of 930 meals daily, with some for home delivery and others served in satellite kitchens at assisted living apartments and community centers.

Plan aims to minimize disruption to operations

The project is designed to cause minimal disruption to daily routines at Vitatorg Day Training. The facility is a vibrant hub, hosting many programs beyond food production. Lindargata 57-66 has 94 residential units, including 67 owned by Félagsbústaðir Social Housing that are rented as assisted living apartments for older adults. The building offers a variety of social activities for residents and other neighborhood members, along with a podiatry practice and hair salon. The cafeteria serves lunch daily and offers refreshments on weekdays.

However, a hot lunch will not be available at Vitatorg Day Training during the construction period. People who normally eat at Vitatorg Day Training can visit nearby community centers during this time or have lunch delivered to their homes.

Private contractor to handle food production during closure

The kitchen is scheduled to close in May 2026. The renovation is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

A private contractor will handle food production during the construction, while the Department of Welfare will continue to oversee all services.
