Safe and suitable housing

The city will launch an ambitious housing initiative over the next decade, building up to 16,000 new residential units by 2034. This was announced in Reykjavík's new Housing Plan, which the City Executive Council approved at yesterday's meeting.
The focus will be on building housing that serves diverse community groups, including youth, first-time buyers, low-income residents, seniors and people with specific needs. The city's goal is for 35% of all new development to come from nonprofit development organizations or take the form of social housing. This aims to promote balanced social integration, greater equality and a healthier housing market.
Building a city for people
"We're building a city for people, not just properties," Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir said in her address. "We're committed to ensuring that residents have real access to safe and suitable housing."
Partnership for faster development
The City plans to work closely with the labor movement, nonprofit organizations, the state and pension funds to speed up development in the city's development areas, including Hallar in Úlfarsárdalur and other locations. At the same time, emphasis will be placed on sustainable development near green transportation, services and green areas, in line with the goals of Reykjavík's Municipal Plan 2040, where CityLine will form the backbone of the city's development and transportation corridors.
