Preschool enrollment for fall 2025 begins March 3 at all city preschools, both municipal and private. Most openings become available when the current class moves on to primary school.
Private preschools join Vala system for first time
Private preschools will use the Vala system for the first time this year, conducting enrollment simultaneously with municipal preschools. All preschool applications must be submitted through Vala, whether for municipal or private schools. Parents who previously applied to private preschools must resubmit their applications through Vala. Parents with existing municipal preschool applications in Vala can update them to include private schools.
Municipal preschools assign spots based on age, with older children receiving priority. Applications are being processed for children born in February 2024 or earlier. The only exceptions to age-based admission are children granted priority status for disabilities or social circumstances. Private preschools generally follow the same waitlist rules as municipal schools, as outlined in the Rules on Preschool Services. For fall 2025 enrollment, private preschools may continue using their established admission procedures. Under agreements with private preschools, Reykjavík residents who select a private preschool as their first choice between March 1 and April 15 receive priority.
Parents must review applications before March 3
Enrollment begins March 3, 2025, with applications processed through April 15, 2025. During this period, new applications won't be accepted, and submitted applications can't be changed until after May 10. The first offers will be sent out shortly after enrollment begins. It takes several weeks to allocate spots that open up in the fall. Parents and legal guardians must review their applications before March 3.
The Preschool Admission Tracker is available until March 3 to check estimated waitlist positions. The tracker will be unavailable from March 3 to September 1, 2025, during fall application processing.
The Preschool Admission Tracker is user-friendly. Enter your child's birth date and neighborhood to see estimated waitlist positions at local preschools. Rankings are based on birth date, current applications, graduating children, and other factors. An interactive map helps compare preschool locations near home or work. The Preschool Admission Tracker is updated daily. Tracker results are not applications and do not guarantee enrollment. The tracker shows your child's potential position at preferred preschools based on current applications, which may change as applications are added or withdrawn.
Preschool Admission Tracker covers municipal preschools only
We encourage early use of the Preschool Admission Tracker when selecting schools. The Preschool Admission Tracker currently includes only municipal preschools.
Parents should rank their school preferences, starting with their top choice. Parents can now select seven schools instead of the previous five. After submitting an application, parents can track their child's waitlist position at each selected school through Vala Preschool. Initial applications must include between two and seven preschool choices. Parents should carefully review their applications to ensure school preferences are correctly entered.
