Seeking space for public market

Almenningsmarkaður-myndskreyting

Reykjavík City is seeking partners for a public market in Reykjavík.

The call for ideas is three-fold, seeking the following:

  • Real estate that could host a public market in accordance with the analysis that m/studio_ prepared for the City;
  • An operator who wants to run a public market;
  • Parties who want to sell goods or hold events at a public market.

An advertisement is published on Reykjavík City's website, and interested parties have until June 12 to submit their ideas. More information can be found in the advertisement: Do you want to host and/or operate a public market?

The purpose of the market research is to gauge the interest and opinions of market participants on possible hosting and/or operation of a public market in Reykjavík, but no decision has been made about Reykjavík City's future involvement. Reykjavík City will compile a list of parties who respond to the survey and use the data to inform future development and a possible tender later.

Important social venue

Hilmar Hildar Magnúsar

Hilmar Hildar Magnúsar presented ideas about a public market at the Economic and Urban Development meeting.

"Public markets in cities are important for commerce and social connections among residents. They are among the few places where people of different nationalities and social backgrounds gather, exchange goods and interact." This was among the points made in a presentation by Hilmar Hildar Magnússon at the Economic and Urban Development informational meeting, where the project was presented as important infrastructure in the city.

Hilmar also reviewed the requirements for public markets.
