Innovation at the City

Residents, staff and City partners approach challenges and opportunities with creative and solution-oriented thinking. Reykjavík City strategically uses innovation to improve services, increase efficiency and create value for the community.

On this page, we showcase several projects that demonstrate how innovation benefits residents and the future of Reykjavík.

New Reykjavík City website provides overview of housing development

Reykjavík City has launched a new website providing residents and stakeholders with a clear and accessible overview of housing development throughout the city. The site features mapped urban development, information about ongoing projects, and future plans for city neighborhoods. The goal is to increase transparency, improve communication, and enable residents to follow how the city is being shaped and developed.

Better City for Children – integrated services for children, young people and families

The Better City for Children initiative aims to improve services for children, youth, and their families in school and recreational activities. More services for children and youth should be available locally, appropriate support should be provided as soon as possible, and there should be tighter integration between the Department of Education and Youth and the Department of Welfare at the district service center.

The Center for Outdoor Activities & Studies (MÚÚ) equips teachers and instructors to incorporate outdoor activities and learning into school and recreational programs, fostering diverse and engaging learning experiences for children and young people while strengthening their connection to nature in the city's environment.

Free store in Gerðuberg promotes reuse and the circular economy

A free store has opened in Gerðuberg where residents can donate and pick up used items, drop off waste in collection bins, and borrow tools from self-service cabinets provided by the Tool Library. The free store, a joint project between Reykjavík City Library, the Department of Environment & Planning, and SORPA, also offers a diverse program of classes on repairs, reuse and environmental awareness. It is located on the upper floor of Gerðuberg and open whenever the building is open – everyone is welcome.

Artificial intelligence and international collaboration support innovation in school and recreational activities

The Office of Innovation and Development at the Department of Education & Youth works on diverse projects that strengthen professionalism and innovation, including through international grant applications, project management and report preparation. Artificial intelligence provides crucial support in this work by facilitating organization, information gathering and data processing in complex projects. These projects have enhanced teaching and professional development, opened doors to new cultural worlds for children and young people, and created new opportunities for learning and growth.

The Tool Library promotes reuse and sustainable consumption

The Tool Library is an innovation project that promotes more sustainable consumption by enabling residents to borrow various useful tools and items instead of purchasing new ones. The project is a collaboration between the Reykjavík City Library and the RVK Tool Library, based on circular economy principles that emphasize reuse, sharing and reduced waste. The Tool Library is part of the city's environmental and social responsibility, creating new ways to combine services, innovation and sustainability for the benefit of residents and the environment.

Virtual visits enhance resident safety and connections

Virtual visits are a Reykjavík City service where social workers, nurses or other health and welfare staff connect with residents through video conferencing technology. The goal is to enhance safety, reduce social isolation and facilitate communication with service providers. The service is used for follow-ups, medication management, counseling and conversations with service users in their own homes. Virtual visits are part of the City's welfare technology solutions that promote independent living and better quality of life for residents.
