Green housing of the future
Housing is one of today's most critical issues, but the extensive and necessary residential development leaves a significant carbon footprint. New green ideas and solutions are needed, which is why Reykjavík City is spearheading development projects as part of the Green Deal, aligning with the priorities of the municipal plan and Reykjavík City's Climate Policy.
Competition - Sites for green housing
In early 2022, Reykjavík City sought applications for partnerships on five promising sites for eco-friendly housing development.

Domestic and international models
The project draws inspiration from two sources: the city's affordable housing initiative, which partners with nine developers to build cost-effective homes for young people and first-time buyers citywide, and the international Re-inventing Cities project, which is developing two unique projects at Lágmúli and Ártúnshöfði.
Proximity to green spaces and recreational areas
The city will prioritize areas near green spaces and recreational zones that can benefit from this proximity. The goal is for 25-33% of homes in each area to be affordable rental housing (with capital contributions) or managed by non-profit organizations. Development in all areas must meet the contractual objectives for new development sites.
