Safety and conduct rules for Reykjavík swimming pools

Swimmers use the facility at their own risk and are required to comply fully with all safety and conduct rules. Swimmers must follow staff instructions at all times.

Violations of these rules may result in removal from the facility, suspension of access cards, and — in more serious cases — a report to the police.

Safety rules

  • Children under 10 (as of June 1 of the year they turn 10) must be accompanied by a swimmer aged 15 or older. Unless you are the parent or guardian, you can accompany a maximum of two children.
  • Children are the responsibility of their parents or guardians at the swimming pool, who must keep them within direct line of sight at all times.
  • All swimmers are required to shower thoroughly without swimwear before entering the pool. Swimmers must also wear clean, approved swimwear.
  • Diving is permitted only at designated diving lanes and/or platforms.
  • Non-swimmers must use approved arm floats or swim jackets. Please note that inflatable rings are toys, not safety devices.
  • The use of tobacco, e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and similar products — as well as the consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances — is prohibited throughout the entire swimming pool facility. Anyone under the influence is prohibited from entering.
  • Groups of children — including those from after-school programs, school groups, scouts, summer courses, and similar organizations — must be clearly identified.
  • The use of diving equipment, such as snorkels and diving masks that cover the respiratory system, is not allowed without special permission. Equipment must be certified.

Rules of conduct

  • Swimmers must follow staff instructions at all times.
  • All visitors are expected to treat staff and fellow swimmers with consideration and respect.
  • Swimmers must conduct themselves in a way that does not create undue risk — to themselves, to staff, or to other visitors.
  • Threatening and/or violent behavior or language directed at staff or other swimmers is strictly prohibited.
  • Cameras, phones and other smart devices are strictly prohibited in changing rooms and pool areas.
  • Children of primary school age — determined by turning 6 years old by June 1 of that year — must use the changing facilities designated for their gender. Private changing rooms are available if it is not suitable for children to enter men's or women's changing rooms.
  • Glass containers are not permitted in the pool area or changing rooms.

Liability and indemnity rules

  • Swimmers use the facility at their own risk.
  • Swimmers should exercise extra caution when conditions warrant it — for example, when warning signs are posted or when weather creates particular safety hazards.
  • The pool facilities are not responsible for shoes or other personal belongings of guests. Swimmers are encouraged to use the lockable lockers provided.
  • Lost and found items not claimed within 90 days may be donated or disposed of.

Penalties

  • If a swimmer commits a minor violation of the safety and/or conduct rules, a staff member will address the issue directly with the swimmer and give them the opportunity to correct their behavior.
  • If a violation is deemed serious and/or repeated, staff may remove the swimmer from the facility without prior warning. The same applies if a swimmer refuses to comply with a staff member's request to stop behavior that violates the conduct rules.
  • More serious and/or repeated incidents may result in a temporary or permanent suspension of the swimmer's access card — see the Reykjavík Card terms of use for further details — or a temporary ban from the facility.
  • In the most serious cases, the incident may also be required to be reported to the police.

Sauna rules

  • You must sit on a towel. Towels prevent sweat and water from soaking into the wood, helping extend its lifespan. You can purchase towels at the front desk or skip the sauna and use the steam room instead.
  • Children under 16 are not allowed unless accompanied by an adult.
  • The water spray on the stones is automatic. You can press the button inside the sauna every 4 minutes to release additional water onto the stones.
  • All scented oils are prohibited.
  • Please be considerate of other guests.
  • Staff may remove guests who do not follow these rules.

Infrared sauna rules

  • You must sit on a towel. Towels prevent sweat and water from soaking into the wood, helping extend its lifespan. You can purchase towels at the front desk or skip the sauna and use the steam room instead.
  • Children under 16 are not allowed unless accompanied by an adult.
  • Do not lean against the black panels. This can damage them.
  • All scented oils are prohibited.
  • Please be considerate of other guests.
  • Staff may remove guests who do not follow these rules.

Rules on children

  • From June 1 of the year children turn 10, they can go swimming without supervision (after finishing 4th grade).
  • Children under 10 years of age are not permitted to access swimming pools unless accompanied by a person who is 15 years of age or older.
  • Each person may supervise a maximum of two children, unless the person is a parent or guardian (see regulation on swimming and bathing facilities Chapter 1, Article 14).
  • Free for children and young people 0-16 years old.
  • The young people fee is paid on August 1st of the year when individuals turn 16 years old (after they finish primary school).
  • Parents and guardians are always responsible for their children. Children who cannot swim shall wear arm floats/swim vests.
  • Children should use the appropriate locker for their gender as of June 1 of the year in which the child starts primary school (becomes 6 years old). Private changing rooms are available if it is not suitable for children to enter men's or women's changing rooms.
  • An employee may be asked to help a child through the change room.

International school groups

  • We don't complete separate health and safety forms for school groups.
  • Swimming pools in Reykjavík follow the regulation covering swimming facilities that all pools in Iceland must follow. You can read more about the regulation here, though please note it's currently only available in Icelandic.
