Reykjavík Card usage permissions.

Because the Reykjavík Card functions as an access card, it must be presented at each visit. Access cannot be granted through other means, such as an ID number lookup at the service desk, unless valid identification is presented. The access card is required to activate any subscriptions or credit balances.

The different types of subscriptions available for purchase or loading onto the Reykjavík Card are described below. To avoid confusion, cardholders must always own or purchase their own access card. A complimentary subscription does not include a complimentary access card.

Credit

  • Credit for a set number of visits
  • Issued under an individual's name and ID number, though others may use it (groups excluded)
  • prepaid cards remain valid for 48 months from the date of purchase

Subscription

  • Issued under a specific individual's name and ID number for that cardholder's personal use onlyare separate for children and young people, adults, seniors, and other defined groups
  • the card provides access to designated service locations for the duration of its validity
  • the card may be used at self-service gates twice per day; cardholders wishing to use it more often must visit the front desk
  • cardholders 18 and older are photographed for identification; those who decline must visit the front desk and present valid official identification on each visit
  • Once the subscription commitment period ends, the subscription automatically renews on a month-to-month basis at the current rate until canceled. The cancellation notice period is one month. Prepaid passes expire automatically at the end of the commitment period.
  • Complimentary pass

a period-based card that follows the same terms as an annual subscription (see above), granting free access to the cardholder with costs covered by an institution or company

  • cardholders may use a complimentary pass only once per day
  • Employee benefits card

a period-based card that follows the same terms as an annual subscription (see above) and is issued at no cost to Reykjavík City employees or those receiving equivalent benefits under an agreement

  • Reykjavík City's current policies determine eligibility requirements
  • when an employee benefits card is used, usage data is collected and shared with the relevant City department or contracting party responsible for the employee and covering the cost of services
  • cardholders may not use an employee benefits card after leaving Reykjavík City employment or otherwise losing the associated benefits For Reykjavík City employees, a supervisor may request immediate card deactivation to prevent unauthorized use
  • Reykjavík City's obligations and permitted exceptions for closures

Reykjavík City is committed to keeping its service locations open during published hours.

However, Reykjavík City may close specific service locations for up to five consecutive weeks when necessary—due to maintenance, legal or regulatory requirements, or unforeseeable circumstances—without breaching its obligations (the permitted closure period).

Eligibility to request a card freeze

If a specific service location's closure is expected to exceed the permitted closure period under Article 4, annual subscription cardholders may request a temporary card suspension for the remaining duration.

Cardholders unable to use Reykjavík Card services due to illness or injury during the validity period may request a card freeze within two months of the accident or onset of illness by presenting a medical certificate. The freeze matches the period of incapacity stated in the medical certificate, up to a maximum of two months. A card may be frozen only once in any 12-month period.

If a cardholder's status changes during an annual pass's validity period to qualify for better rates—limited to disabled persons, seniors, and Reykjavík City employees—they may apply for a new card at the improved rate and request an update to their previous card.

Send requests to update or freeze a Reykjavík Card to reykjavikurkort@reykjavik.is.

FeesReykjavík City publishes a fee schedule for participating venues. This fee schedule is available on the Reykjavík City website and at service locations.Return policy

Prepaid cards cannot be converted into annual passes.

Annual passes may not be transferred to another ID number (see the exception in Article 5).

Violations, other penalties, and card suspension

If a cardholder violates these terms of use—such as by allowing unauthorized access with their card, or by committing serious or repeated conduct violations at a service location—Reykjavík City may:

temporarily suspend the card without notice or refund

a violation generally results in a three-month suspension

a temporary suspension also includes a temporary ban from the relevant venue.

  • If a cardholder ignores a temporary card suspension or venue ban, or if their card requires suspension multiple times, the City may close the card for the remainder of its validity period.
  • If someone is caught using a Reykjavík Card (excluding prepaid cards) registered to another person, Reykjavík City may cancel that card.
  • For benefit cards or complimentary passes, the City will also notify the payer of the cancellation and the reasons behind it.

Lost cards

Cardholders can report a lost card at any facility or send an email to reykjavikurkort@reykjavik.is and have their credit transferred to a new access card.

A replacement access card fee applies based on the current fee schedule.

The cardholder remains responsible for all card use until the City receives a cancellation request.
