Terms and Conditions of the Reykjavík City Card

These Terms and Conditions apply to cards issued by the Department of Culture and Sports of the City of Reykjavík (hereinafter referred to as the Reykjavík City Card). Reykjavík City Cards may be issued either digitally or as plastic cards. 

The Reykjavík City Card is an access card that grants entry in accordance with the services purchased (and/or complimentary services assigned) to the card at any given time. The card provides access during the regular opening hours of the service locations it covers. 

1. Acceptance of terms

By purchasing and/or using a Reykjavík City Card, the cardholder agrees to comply fully with these Terms and Conditions and agrees to follow the applicable rules of conduct at the service locations. 

2. Service locations 

The following locations accept the Reykjavík City Card: 

Reykjavík City Museum: Árbær Open Air Museum, Aðalstræti, Reykjavík Museum of Photography, Maritime Museum, Viðey 

Reykjavík Park and Zoo 

Reykjavík Art Museum: Hafnarhús, Kjarvalsstaðir, Ásmundarsafn 

Reykjavík Swimming pools: Árbæjarlaug, Breiðholtslaug, Dalslaug, Grafarvogslaug, Klébergslaug, Laugardalslaug, Sundhöll Reykjavíkur, Vesturbæjarlaug 

Ylströndin (Reykjavík Geothermal Beach) 

3. User rules

As the Reykjavík City Card is an access card, it must be presented for use. Access cannot be requested through other means (e.g. ID lookup at reception) unless valid identification is presented. 

Below are the different subscription types that may be purchased/loaded onto the card. Note that in all cases, the cardholder must possess/purchase the access card itself. A free subscription does not equal a free access card. 

Value card 

  • credit for a specific number of visits  
  • issued to an individual (name and ID number), but others may use it (not valid for groups)  
  • valid for 48 months from purchase date  

Annual card 

  • issued to a specific individual and for personal use only  
  • categorized by children/youth, adults, seniors, and other defined groups  
  • grants access to specified locations during its validity period  
  • can be used at self-service gates twice per day; additional visits require staff assistance  
  • a photo is taken for identification (if over 18). If declined, valid ID must be shown at each visit  

Free card 

  • a time-based card (same terms as annual card) where access is free of charge for the user and paid by an institution or company  
  • may only be used once per day  

Benefit card 

  • a time-based card (same terms as annual card), issued to Reykjavík City employees or others with equivalent benefits, free of charge to the cardholder  
  • eligibility is determined by Reykjavík City rules at each time 
  • usage data is collected and shared with the relevant department or contractual payer  
  • use is prohibited after employment ends or benefits are withdrawn 
  • supervisors may request card deactivation upon termination  

4. Obligations and Closures 

The City of Reykjavík undertakes to keep its service locations open in accordance with published opening hours. 

However, locations may be closed for up to 5 weeks at a time if necessary (e.g. maintenance, legal requirements, or unforeseen events) without constituting a breach of obligations. 

5. Card Freezing 

If a closure exceeds the period defined above, annual cardholders may request to freeze their card for the excess duration. 

If a cardholder cannot use services due to illness or injury, they may request a freeze within two months (with a medical certificate). The freeze may last up to 2 months and can only be granted once every 12 months. 

If a cardholder becomes eligible for better terms (e.g. disability, senior status, or employment), they may apply for a new card and request a name transfer on older card.

6. Pricing

The City of Reykjavík issues a price list for its service locations. The price list is available on the City of Reykjavík’s website and at service locations. 

7. Refunds and transfers 

Value cards cannot be converted into annual cards  

Annual cards are non-transferable (except as stated in Section 5

8. Breaches and sanctions 

If the cardholder violates the user rules under these terms, for example by allowing others access using their card without authorization, or is guilty of serious and/or repeated violations of conduct rules at a service location, the City of Reykjavík is authorized to: 

  • temporarily block the card without notice and without refund  
  • as a general rule, a breach shall result in a temporary suspension of 3 months  
  • a temporary suspension also entails a temporary ban from visiting  

If the cardholder disregards a temporary suspension and visitation ban, or if it proves necessary to repeatedly block the same cardholder’s card, the City of Reykjavík is authorized to block the card for the remainder of its validity period. 

If an individual is found to be using a Reykjavík Card (does not apply to prepaid cards) issued in another person’s name, the City of Reykjavík is authorized to block the card in question. 

In cases involving employee benefit cards or complimentary cards, the payer will also be notified of the card’s suspension and the reasons for it. 

9. Lost Cards 

The cardholder may report a lost card at the nearest service location or by sending an email to reykjavikurkort@reykjavik.is and have their balance transferred to a new access card. 

A fee for a new access card shall be charged in accordance with the applicable price list. 

The cardholder is responsible for all use of the card until a request for its cancellation has been received.

11. Data Protection 

The processing of personal data by the City of Reykjavík is governed by the Act on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data No. 90/2018 (the Data Protection Act). By accepting these terms, the cardholder grants the City of Reykjavík permission to process data generated through the use of the Reykjavík Card. 

The processing of personal data in connection with the use of the Reykjavík Card is carried out by the Culture and Sports Department of the City of Reykjavík. The primary purpose of processing personal data is to provide the services requested by the cardholder and delivered upon presentation of the Reykjavík Card. The processing is based on the informed consent of the data subject. 

If the cardholder does not provide the requested personal data, it may result in the inability to approve an application for issuing the card. The cardholder also has the right to withdraw their consent at any time. However, withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out on the basis of consent prior to its withdrawal. Cancellation of the card agreement should be sent to reykjavikurkort@reykjavik.is. It is also possible to make contact by phone at +354 411-1111. Access to personal data is restricted to staff who require it for their work. 

The City of Reykjavík uses information such as the cardholder’s name, photo, national ID number, and email address to identify them at service points. This personal data is also processed for the purpose of issuing and reissuing lost cards where applicable, as well as transferring balances between identification cards upon request. Furthermore, the City of Reykjavík may use the cardholder’s contact information to notify them of service disruptions and to provide general information about services. 

The City of Reykjavík will also use the cardholder’s personal data to conduct statistical analyses aimed at improving services and analysing usage, such as determining how many visitors are present at each service location at any given time. 

In cases where employees of the City of Reykjavík request the issuance of a Reykjavík Card, personal data is shared from the immediate supervisor to the office of the Culture and Sports Department to enable the issuance of a card in accordance with the City’s employment terms. 

Cardholders may at any time request information about the personal data stored about them in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act.

12. Governing Law and Jurisdiction  

These terms are governed by Icelandic law, as are any matters that may arise from their use, unless otherwise specifically agreed. 

In the event of a dispute arising from a breach of these terms, the case may be brought before the District Court of Reykjavík. 

13. Effective date

These terms are effective from 15 April 2026
