Description:

Implementation and monitoring of the Reykjavík Waste Management Ordinance, with a focus on increasing sorting through public awareness campaigns.

Íslenska Gámafélagið and Terra are the two largest companies that handle waste collection and processing in the capital area. Both companies operate under certified environmental management systems (EMS) and offer customers advice on waste management, in addition to having extensive expertise in sustainability. They offer collection and sorting services and have contracts with third-party recycling companies.

SORPA bs. is a municipal waste reception company that serves both the public and private parties. SORPA handles the processing and export of recyclable waste, as well as unsorted waste for energy production. SORPA bs. can improve the quality of sorted waste through educational projects and by setting conditions for accepting waste from private parties. SORPA also operates GAJA, a processing facility for organic waste.

Consultations with stakeholders are underway. Íslenska Gámafélagið and SORPA have confirmed they are defining their contribution to the agreement. Meetings with stakeholders are scheduled to clarify project goals and establish the scope and frequency of communication and collaboration for the coming years. Additionally, the talks will cover reporting methods, such as leveraging existing sustainability reports and metrics.

According to the Regional Plan for Waste Management, the goal is to cap emissions at 2022 levels through 2032, even as the population is expected to increase during the same period.
