The season for studded tires has passed, with rain and warmth expected in the capital area. Using studded tires is not permitted after April 15, as they quickly wear down streets, cause noise, and contribute to air pollution.
The ratio of studded to non-studded tires was measured on Wednesday, April 17. The results showed that 30% of vehicles were using studded tires, while 70% had other types of tires.
Therefore, the proportion of studded tires has somewhat decreased from the last count in March, when it was 38%. This is still significantly higher than the same time last year, when it was 20%. Two years ago, it was also around 20%, or 20.9%.
The ratio generally fluctuates around this time of year, and the switch to summer tires is influenced by the weather and conditions as we approach the First Day of Summer. March and April have been relatively cold in the southwest corner, but now there are changes in the air.
There's no need to wait any longer in the capital area to say goodbye to the studs.
The Icelandic Automobile Association (FÍB) publishes an annual survey of good summer tires, with criteria: Braking, wall grip, driving sensation, flotation, road noise, and resistance to wear.
