Bergur Felixson

The School & Recreation Council remembered Bergur Felixson, former director of Reykjavík City Preschools, at yesterday's meeting. Bergur passed away on December 1 at 87 years old. Bergur was a champion for children's issues and led Reykjavík City Preschools during a time of rapid growth and development in preschool education across Reykjavík.

He served as director of the Children's Friends Society Sumargjöf from 1975 to 1978. In 1978, he became director of Reykjavík City Preschools, where he worked until retirement in 2007.

Preschool becomes first education level

Bergur was passionate about progressive, professional preschool education. Under his leadership, Reykjavík City's daycare centers transformed into preschools, establishing the first education level. During his tenure, many purpose-built preschools opened, improving facilities and access for young Reykjavík residents.

Bergur also emphasized parent collaboration and pioneered the use of parent surveys to improve and develop preschool education in the city.

Remembering a trusted leader and colleague

Preschool directors, staff, and City colleagues fondly remember Bergur as a trusted leader who strongly supported the city's preschool system. He championed the important work done in preschools and promoted positive attitudes toward preschool education and preschool teachers.

The Reykjavík City Department of Education & Youth extends heartfelt condolences to Bergur Felixson's family.
