No sports activities for the next two weeks

The Chief Epidemiologist and the National Commissioner of Police's Civil Protection Department have recommended that all sports and fitness activities should be suspended for the next 2 weeks within the greater metropolitan area.

This is done to prevent groups from gathering, as it is difficult to ensure required social distancing and prevent unnecessary mingling of people under such circumstances – which in return may cause the virus to spread more widely, increasing the pressure on the health system.

The Departments of Education and Sport Activities of all 6 municipalities within the metropolitan region have, in consultation with the Civil Defence Committee, decided to suspend all sports activities and indoors physical education for two weeks - as of 8 October until 19 October.

Physical education will take place outdoors and in line with maximum infection control measures.  Swimming-pools will remain closed for the public, and all swimming lessons in schools are suspended.

These measures are taken to show solidarity with The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland’s actions regarding restrictions on all sport activities within the capital area. This is done in order to protect children, compulsory school employees, and school-work in general.  The virus is the opponent here, and it is important that all residents show solidarity and pull their weight in order to curb the spread of infection.
