Free Shop opens in Gerðuberg

Environment

The project is based on a Danish model of running recycling stations in residents' local environment, increasing reuse, recycling, and supporting the circular economy.

A Free Shop, where all items are free, opens in Gerðuberg on Wednesday, September 25 at 4pm. The Free Shop also accepts certain waste categories, lends tools and items, and offers creative classes on reuse and repairs.

Danish model

The project is based on a Danish model of local recycling stations that increase reuse, recycling, and support the circular economy and municipal waste goals. Reykjavík City Library, the Department of Environment & Planning, and SORPA collaborate on this project.

Seasonal selection

Bring items you want to repurpose or find what you need at the Free Shop. The selection changes with the seasons. You may find school bags and warm mittens in fall, Christmas decorations in December, ski gear for winter, and bicycles when spring arrives!

Drop-off boxes

The Free Shop has drop-off boxes for batteries, electronics, broken dishes, worn-out pots and pans, candle remnants, and more.

Circular Library

Self-service lockers from the Circular Library - RVK Tool Library lend various items like tents, ice cream makers, and small tools.

Events for all ages

A diverse program offers creative ways to reuse items, care for the environment, grow plants, repair things, and give them new life.
