All museums run by the City of Reykjavík will be closed as of today, Wednesday 7 October until Monday 19 October, due to stricter infection control rules, aimed to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new regulations issued by the Icelandic Health Authorities, do not request the closing of museums, but stricter limitations of mass gatherings and social distancing make their operation impossible. This decision will be revised after two weeks.
The City of Reykjavík museums comprise: The City Libraries which operate in six locations throughout the city; Reykjavík Art Museum in Hafnarhúsið, Kjarvalsstaðir and Ásmundarsafn; and the Reykjavík City Museum that consists of The Settlement Exhibition, the Reykjavík Museum of Photography, the Reykjavík Maritime Museum, Árbær Open Air Museum, and Viðey Island.
The museums have been well attended by local guests in the past few months. The next two weeks will be used to replace individual exhibitions, and attend to internal affairs.
More emphasis will be placed on the local community in the coming months, and the staff looks forward to welcoming their guests again when the museums reopen.
The validity of the Reykjavík Culture Pass will be prolonged to compensate for the time during which the museums remain closed, and the libraries will not collect fines for the period in question.
