Construction in Naustin set to begin

Naustin will have a striking pattern inspired by classic Icelandic knitwear, laid across the street like a runner on a banquet table. Accessibility for all users is a priority, and the bright, smooth surface will give the street a lighter, more open feel.

Construction in Naustin begins after the weekend, featuring pipe replacement and a new surface that will transform the street's character. The street connecting Hafnarstræti and Tryggvagata will become a shared street, aligning with the approved traffic plan for the Kolaportið district. Beyond the necessary piping work, the redesign aims to enhance public life and create a more vibrant, accessible street corridor. Reykjavík City and Veitur Utilities jointly oversee the project.

A new look inspired by Icelandic knitting patterns

Naustin's new surface will showcase a striking pattern inspired by classic Icelandic knitwear, laid across the street like a runner on a banquet table. Accessibility for all users is a priority, and the bright, smooth surface will give the street a lighter, more open feel.

The street will also feature planting beds with trees and varied greenery, alongside a small stage that doubles as seating and an event space on festive occasions. The entire street corridor will be equipped with a snowmelt heating system.

Renewal of essential infrastructure

Crews will replace utility pipes and install a dual municipal sewer system, significantly improving the area's ability to manage stormwater during heavy rainfall. The existing pipes date back to 1915 and 1925 and are long overdue for replacement.

Design and lighting

Landmótun designed the new street corridor. Lota handled the lighting design, incorporating lamp posts reminiscent of ship masts and spotlights that cast a distinctive glow on the stage during events. The lighting also highlights the bright surface and improves pedestrian safety. VBV provided the engineering design, and Efla produced the visual materials.

Construction timeline and access

Maintaining clear communication with stakeholders throughout construction is a priority, and an informational meeting has already taken place. The street will close to vehicle traffic during construction, while pedestrian access will remain open at all times. Construction is scheduled for completion in December.
