Organizational changes focus on efficiency and improved services

Reykjavík City Hall reflected in the pond.

Improved services for residents and businesses, simpler and clearer processes, and increased transparency and efficiency are the main goals of new organizational changes at Reykjavík City approved at today's City Executive Council meeting. The changes include combining the planning and building officials' offices.

Planning and development issues play a vital role in a rapidly growing city. At the March 4 City Council meeting, the coalition parties in the council approved a proposal for more efficient work processes for maintaining and operating the city's properties. The Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer, Department of Finance & Risk Management (FAS) and Department of Environment & Planning (USK) were assigned to reorganize the city's property management, and today five proposals for organizational changes within these units were approved.

The changes are designed to simplify and strengthen planning and building processes through shorter chains of command, increased efficiency, better services and improved performance. The changes involve combining the planning and building officials' offices, moving the Property Office from FAS to USK, and transferring projects from the Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer to USK.

The changes are based on a project-focused approach and are expected to result in considerable cost savings over the long term. The guiding principles are increased efficiency and flexibility along with improved services, emphasis on risk management and enhanced cost control.

More details about the changes are available in the City Executive Council meeting minutes from May 15, 2025.
