The future of school and recreational activities in Laugardalur
Planning is underway to shape the future of educational and recreational activities in Laugardalur. This page will provide updates on decisions, preparations, and developments.
A future in progress
The School & Recreation Council has approved continuing work on developing and building a consolidated school for adolescent students in Laugardalur, with modifications that address concerns about changes to school districts. Under this plan, Laugarnesskóli and Laugalækjarskóli will remain in the same school district.
The three existing primary schools in the area will serve younger students: Langholtsskóli for 1st to 7th grade, Laugarnesskóli for 1st to 4th grade, and Laugalækjarskóli for 5th to 7th grade.
All schools follow a shared vision and strategy: The City of Reykjavík's Education Policy. The policy emphasizes innovative educational and recreational programs that give all children equal opportunities to learn in a diverse environment aligned with their interests and abilities.

Consolidated school for adolescent level
Construction of consolidated school for adolescent level and maintenance work
Following consultations with school administrators, students and parents, the future structure of educational and recreational activities in Laugardalur is becoming clearer. On Dec. 9, 2024, the School & Recreation Council approved moving forward with developing and building a consolidated school for adolescent students (known as Scenario 4), incorporating modifications that address concerns about school district changes. Under this plan, Laugarnesskóli and Laugalækjarskóli will remain in the same school district. Major renovations and improvements will be made to Laugarnesskóli, Laugalækjarskóli and Langholtsskóli while the new consolidated school is being built.
The adolescent school is slated for construction in the triangle area between the Ice Rink and the Þróttur and Ármann community center. The school will serve students in grades 8-10 from the three school zones: Langholtsskóli, Laugarnesskóli and Laugalækjarskóli. Current plans include accommodating adolescent students from the surrounding development areas along Grensásvegur, Orkureitur and Skeifan. During the consultation process, concerns were raised about potential overcrowding if development areas are included in the school district. These plans will be reviewed in 2026 when population numbers and demographics become clearer.
Schools for younger children
Langholtsskóli, Laugalækjarskóli and Laugarnesskóli will become schools for younger children
The three existing primary schools in the area will serve younger students: Langholtsskóli for 1st to 7th grade, Laugarnesskóli for 1st to 4th grade, and Laugalækjarskóli for 5th to 7th grade.
Most feedback received after presentations of Scenario 4 (responses meant to support Scenario 1) expressed concerns about dividing the Laugarnes school district and separating children by age groups. Under plans approved today by the School & Recreation Council, children in the school district will stay together by age groups. The youngest grades (1-4) will be at Laugarnesskóli and middle grades (5-7) at Laugalækjarskóli.
Recreational activities and school band
Along with school renovations, facilities for after-school programs and youth centers must be addressed.
After-school programs for grades 1 and 2 must be provided at Laugarnesskóli and Langholtsskóli. The location of the joint after-school program at the Family Park and Zoo for grades 3 and 4 from these schools also needs evaluation.
Youth center facilities for grades 5-7 must be established at Laugalækjarskóli and Langholtsskóli. The facilities for Hofið, the specialized youth center for disabled children at Laugalækjarskóli, need assessment. Space must also be allocated for the Austurbær school band at Laugalækjarskóli.
Youth center facilities for adolescent students will be included in the consolidated school.
Strong staff and quality education
The Department of Education & Youth has concluded that the modified Scenario 4 offers the best solution for both immediate and long-term educational and recreational needs in Laugardalur.
All three schools have exceptional staff and exemplary educational programs. While these changes will create disruption for both staff and students, our talented team gives us confidence we can preserve what works well while seizing opportunities for further educational improvements.
School construction projects
Construction work and compensatory measures have been ongoing at Langholtsskóli and Laugarnesskóli in recent months.
Project updates are posted on the schools' construction websites.

Developments and maintenance
Summer 2024 mitigation measures
This summer, mitigation measures and improvements are underway at Laugarnesskóli, Laugalækjarskóli, and Langholtsskóli. These aim to ensure better indoor conditions until individual school renovations begin.
The most critical actions were taken at Laugarnesskóli, where the contractor Ístak has been making improvements in 16 areas of the school. The work is based on EFLA's assessment report from April. The main focus is removing materials where mold was detected, such as old insulation and floor coverings. Research shows previous mitigation measures have been effective. This experience guides current efforts.
Langholtsskóli is undergoing mitigation measures. Workers are replacing floor coverings where moisture was detected. Window replacements in C wing are ongoing as part of its renovation.
Laugarlækjarskóli is preparing for improvements. This includes assessing the administrative area for future repairs. Several windows have been replaced in the school. Preparations for further window replacements are underway.
Planned developments for 2025
Reykjavík City's senior administration decided this spring to hire an external project manager. This person will coordinate planned school developments in Laugardalur.
After reviewing Langholtsskóli, Laugarnesskóli, and Laugalækjarskóli, the focus is on renewing the schools' weather barriers. This will make them water and moisture-proof to prevent damage. Preparations are underway to begin construction at the schools next year.
The City is working with the Cultural Heritage Agency to preserve the buildings' unique features. Laugarnesskóli is a protected building. Langholtsskóli will receive similar treatment. Both buildings are magnificent and represent their era's characteristics, which is important to preserve.
The plan is to insulate and plaster all schools externally using approved, quality materials. This will maintain their current appearance and proportions. The extensive construction work will begin next year. The project will start with reviewing and renewing drainage pipes around all schools. Window replacements are scheduled to begin in spring.
Unified condition assessment of the schools
Verkvist ehf., an engineering firm, has been contracted to conduct a unified condition assessment of Laugarnesskóli, Laugalækjarskóli, and Langholtsskóli.
Previous assessments focused on specific areas. Now, a comprehensive review of all three schools will provide a standardized evaluation of their condition. This will offer a complete overview of the schools. It will inform decisions, prioritize projects, and determine the extent of necessary repairs.
The contract with Verkvist requests assessments of:
- Detailed condition of the structures' outer shell and concrete in exterior walls.
- Internal condition of the schools.
- Condition of roofs and basements.
- Photographing and mapping the condition of water pipes, drainage, rainwater pipes, and sewage.
- Condition of technical systems such as electrical, heating, and ventilation systems.
- Condition of acoustics, interior walls, flooring, toilets, and other spaces.
- Fire safety and security measures are also requested.
All assessments are expected to be completed by the end of 2024 to guide further work.
Collaborating with education and recreation professionals
This fall, work begins with Department of Education & Youth experts, school administrators from Langholtsskóli, Laugalækjarskóli, and Laugarnesskóli (3L schools), and staff regarding planned changes to school operations. Each school must be evaluated both individually and collectively, as all will transition to elementary schools under the proposed plan.
The work will be done in sprints, meeting with school staff and experts. Architects will assist and then process the results from each location, coordinating between schools. The hope is to capture and highlight the knowledge within each school community and share it in the evolving school environment.
