Seasonal passes in the Strætó Public Transport Klapp app will be available to Reykjavík primary school-age children in May and June 2026 while officials finalize a permanent free city bus solution. Schools will manage the process, but families must apply separately.

The City Council voted Feb. 3, 2026, to eliminate city bus fares for Reykjavík elementary school-age children starting May 1, 2026. As full implementation proceeds, a temporary bridge measure will provide children with seasonal passes in May and June. Children under 12 already ride the city bus for free. Older children wishing to participate can sign up at their school's office. A subsidy for children attending school in Kjalarnes ensures equal program access regardless of where families reside within city limits.

On July 1, Almenningssamgöngur höfuðborgarsvæðisins ohf. — the new capital area public transit company — will assume operations from Strætó Public Transport. Alongside this stopgap measure, discussions with the new company regarding a permanent solution will begin. The working group recommends that this solution take the form of an NFC upgrade to the Klapp app. Officials will also explore linking the system to the → reykjavik.is/frettir/2026/reykjavikurkortid-verdur-stafraent-notendur-setja-saman-sitt-eigid-kortdigital city card.
