Free Strætó rides for primary school children in Reykjavík

Strætó on the move

The Reykjavík City Council approved a coalition proposal today to eliminate bus fares for primary school children in Reykjavík. The initiative is scheduled to take effect no later than May 1, 2026.

This decision aims to improve children and young people's access to public transportation, reduce traffic from parents driving children to school, sports, and recreational activities, and thereby ease traffic congestion. Additionally, the plan aims to create more equal opportunities for children, reduce social disparities, and support their independence in daily travel around the city.

The City Council directed the mayor to continue working on this initiative in partnership with the Department of Finance & Risk Management, Department of Education & Youth, the Service and Innovation Department, and Strætó Public Transport. This work includes analyzing costs, developing detailed plans, and preparing for rollout. The final implementation plan will be presented to the City Executive Council for approval.

Discussions will also continue with other municipalities in the capital area to coordinate implementation, aiming to eliminate fares for all elementary school children throughout Strætó's entire service area.
