Waste bin maintenance and ordering
If a bin at your home is damaged during collection or normal use, report it to the Reykjavík Waste Collection Department.
You can also order or return bins if your needs change.
Waste bin maintenance
Effective waste collection relies on cooperation between the municipality and residents.
In Reykjavík, residential waste bins belong to the City, which maintains them.
Residents are responsible for cleaning their bins and ensuring they do not create health hazards or cause a nuisance. Residents should therefore take good care of their bins and keep them clean.
Do not remove lids or handles from bins or alter their appearance in any way. If a bin is damaged beyond normal use or wear and tear, the municipality may require you to pay for a replacement.
Ordering and returning waste bins
If your current combination of bins no longer meets your needs, you can order or return a bin through My Pages.
Every household must have at least one blue bin for paper, one green bin for plastic, one brown bin for food waste, and one gray bin for mixed household waste.
In a multi-family residence, a representative of the homeowners' association must order a new bin on the association's behalf.
Certain changes incur an administrative fee under the fee schedule.
