Contractors handling demolition must register their activity on island.is. The public health authority must inspect the project before confirming the registration.

The Building Commissioner must approve plans to issue a building permit before the public health authority confirms the registration.

Asbestos removal

Asbestos is found in many buildings in Reykjavík, in various forms, from floor tile adhesive to roof cladding.

  • Only certified professionals can apply for permits to remove or handle asbestos.
  • The activity must be registered with Reykjavík Public Health and a permit obtained from the Administration of Occupational Safety and Health for demolition, removal, or handling of asbestos.
