Preschool and Day Care Council
At its June 2, 2026, meeting, the City Council approved establishing a Preschool and Day Care Council.
Purpose
The council will oversee preschool and day care services for children as currently defined in Article 3 of the School and Recreation Council's resolution, including preschool board duties under the Preschool Act No. 90/2008 and the social affairs committee's responsibilities for home daycare under Article 34 of the Municipalities' Social Services Act No. 40/1991. In consultation with the School and Recreation Council, the Presidium will draft bylaws for the new council. The Presidium will submit these bylaws, along with proposed amendments to the School and Recreation Council's bylaws, for approval at the City Council's first meeting in September 2026. Until the new resolution is adopted, the council will operate under the School and Recreation Council's resolution.
Sigrún Ásta Einarsdóttir chairs the Preschool and Day Care Council.
The secretaries of the Council are Guðrún Sigtryggsdóttir, chief legal officer of the Department of Education and Youth, and Eygló Traustadóttir, administrative project manager of the Department of Education and Youth.
