Register a disabled parking card for a space

Disabled parking card holders should register their car when using paid parking spaces to ensure accurate registration and avoid meter violation fees issued in error. This registration remains valid until the end of the day at all paid parking spaces in Reykjavík, excluding parking garages.

Designated parking

A designated parking space, sometimes called a disabled parking space or "P-stæði", allows people with motor impairments to park near their home in Reykjavík.

Parking permit

A disabled parking card (sometimes called a disability parking card or disabled parking permit) allows people with motor impairments to park in any designated disabled parking space, such as those outside stores and institutions.

Apply for a disabled parking card at island.is. First you request a medical certificate that your doctor submits electronically to the district commissioner. You can then choose to pick up the card at a district commissioner's office or have it mailed to your home.

Parking garage

Reykjavík City operates seven parking garages in the city center. City parking garages are open daily from 7 a.m. to midnight, except for Bergstaðir, which operates 24 hours a day. You can use the garages for short-term parking or apply for long-term parking by subscription.

EV charging spots

Can I park an electric car in a charging spot without charging?

No. Charging spots are for electric vehicle charging only. Parking is only allowed during charging. In paid parking zones, properly marked charging spots require payment for charging only, not for both parking and charging.

Can I park if the charging station is broken?

No. A broken charging station does not allow parking in the spot.

Usage permit

How do I apply for a permit to use paid parking spaces on municipal land?

  • A permit is required for use of city land according to police regulations. The Use and Supervision Division in the Administration and Quality Office handles processing and issuing of usage permits.
  • More about use permits
  • Permits to use paid parking spaces are issued only when the spaces must be temporarily closed, making them unavailable for regular parking while the permit is valid. These permits are generally granted for construction, equipment installation, surface disruption, or similar work.

They cannot be issued for regular parking, such as leaving a car in a paid space for an extended period or reserving individual spaces for personal use near or within a construction site. Paid public parking spaces are intended for everyone and are not rented out for long-term parking.

  • If a permit includes the use of paid parking spaces, those spaces must be closed while the permit is valid. The permit holder must then contact Reykjavík Parking Service and pay for the parking spaces at the rates in the current fee schedule before use begins.
