Curious numbers 2020, gender statistics compiled by The Human Rights and Democracy Office, have now been published on The City of Reykjavík’s website.

The data summarizes information intended to demonstrate the different position of men and women in society according to their gender.  This year, main emphasis was placed on examining the effects of Covid-19 on gender during the first months of the year.

The information indicates clearly that women are the majority of those working in the field of nursing and care-giving, and have thus been in the lead as frontline employees during these unprecedented times.  Women also make up some 77% of back-up staff for the health and welfare services.  Still, only 55% of women had been tested for Covid-19 by April 2020, compared to 45% of men.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had different effects on people in regards to their origin, i.e. concerning job security as immigrants are more at risk than Icelanders of losing their job according to the study.

Six out of nine district sports clubs in Reykjavik have male chairmen of their general boards, while only three are headed by women.   Men are also in the majority of the boards of six district sports clubs, while women are in the majority of the boards of three district sports clubs.

Since 1961, 21 men have been appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Iceland but not one woman, and all eleven CEO’s of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RUV since 1930, have been men.
