The City of Reykjavík enters emergency phase

Covid-19

""

Emergency phase was declared yesterday by the Icelandic Civil Defence, to take effect as of midnight Sunday 4 October.  This calls for further restrictions on gatherings and stricter infection control measures.

The City of Reykjavík Emergency Committee commenced yesterday to overview the City’s Plan of Action, in response to these new developments of the Covid-19 crisis. All departments called upon their emergency boards over the weekend, to work on new plans in consultation with Civil Defence, in order to keep all necessary services intact at the same time.

Impact on City Services

  • No changes are foreseen in the function of pre-schools and compulsory schools at this stage.
  • Swimming-pools will remain open, but with stricter rules on number of guests.  Only 50% of their total capacity will be allowed, or the use of 50% of locker-room facilities.  Children born after 2005 will be not be included in the total number of guests.  Common contact surfaces will be disinfected at least once a day.
  • Reykjavík’s Family Park and Zoo will be closed until further notice.
  • All efforts will be made to keep the City's Cultural Centres open in consultation with the epidemiological authorities.
  • The Service Desks in Borgartún and The City Hall will remain open as advertised, but people are encouraged to make inquiries by phone or use on-line services and chat-boxes.

Masks are now obligatory at Community Centres for senior citizens

The Welfare Department strives to make sure that services will remain intact at all Community Centres and 73 residences with round-the-clock service.  This includes homes and residence centres for disabled people, short-term accommodations for disabled children, shelters and half-way houses for homeless people, Droplaugarstaðir and Seljahlíð nursing homes, as well as five service-residences for senior citizens.

Special emphasis is placed on ensuring that services for people in vulnerable situations will not be reduced or only slightly adjusted, while guaranteeing utmost safety in terms of infection control.

Therefore, services remain mostly intact, but please pay attention to the following:

  • Opening hours of City Service Centres are unchanged.  People are encouraged to call the City of Reykjavík’s Service Desk tel. 411 11 11, and solve their requests over the phone rather than in person. Masks are obligatory at City Service Centres.
  • Masks are now obligatory at Community Centres for senior citizents.
  • Recreational activities will not be reduced, but people must sign up for events in advance due to restriction of gatherings.  This is done to comply with the new rules where no more than 20 people are allowed into each room, and the 2-metre rule must be respected.
  • City canteens will remain open, but customers now must register in advance, and will be assigned specific dining-slots.
  • The canteen at Vitatorg will continue to serve its residents, but no outsiders will be allowed to enter.  Those who do not live in Vitatorg but have used the canteen, can apply for home-delivered meal by calling tel. 411 9450 or order by e-mail at maturinnheim@reykjavik.is.
  • The shelter at Grandagarður has been temporarily closed due to an employee, who was diagnosed with Covid-19.  Those who use the shelter are encouraged to go to the Lindargata-shelter instead, until it will be safe to open at Grandagarður again.

The one-metre rule will continue to apply, and the use of masks is now obligatory in circumstances where it is difficult to maintain social distancing.
