Traffic safety improvements at the Miklabraut and Grensásvegur intersection
Construction at the Miklabraut and Grensásvegur intersection begins in the coming days to improve traffic safety, visibility, and access for pedestrians and cyclists. The roadwork should wrap up by late September or early October.
About the project
- Crews will install new raised pedestrian crossings at four locations around the intersection where traffic turns right off the main road — commonly known as right-turn slip lanes.
- The project also improves lighting by adding new light poles and street lamps to better illuminate the crosswalks.
- Contractors will upgrade median islands and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the project.
- Crews will add new drainage inlets as well.
- Excavation and surface finishing will take place toward the end of the project.
Temporary traffic changes
Construction will occur in four phases, closing one slip lane at a time while roadwork is underway.
Road user safety
Drivers should pay close attention to area signage and follow all temporary traffic measures. Crews will take special care to protect the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, keeping walking and cycling routes clearly marked throughout the construction period.
Ultimately, this initiative aims to enhance traffic safety, visibility, and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists at the Miklabraut and Grensásvegur intersection.
Similar safety improvements were completed at the Kringlumýrarbraut and Miklabraut intersection in 2024.
