Urban design

The central goal of Reykjavík's Urban Design Policy is to create a livable, sustainable city that strengthens community and offers diverse opportunities for all residents. The City Council approved the policy in 2025, and it is now available in print. You can purchase copies at the Kjarvalsstaðir Museum shop on Flókagata and the Reykjavík City Service Center at Borgartún 12-14.

The Urban Design Policy serves everyone involved in planning and designing the city — whether landowners, developers, designers, or City employees. It lays the groundwork for clearer decision-making and implementation in support of planning, environmental issues, and the welfare of residents. Additionally, the document informs residents about the key considerations involved in designing and planning a thriving city.

These guidelines offer an informative resource for anyone interested in urban design and city and town planning — and in how environmental considerations can be shaped around people and their needs. Ultimately, the policy supports the city's environmental, civic, social, and economic sustainability.
